Covering Lost Luggage with Insurance

Lost in Structuration (XIV) : Fire and IceThere is no bigger nightmare for a traveller than dealing with lost luggage. When you arrive at your holiday apartment in Sydney, the last thing you want to deal with is replacing everything from a lost or stolen suitcase. The cost can get out of hand, especially if expensive items such as cameras, computers, skis, and shoes vanish with the bags.

It is more common than you think

Almost everybody who has travelled has lost a bag or two. Airport and train station porters can get careless. Baggage handlers can be extremely clumsy, and hotel staff are not always that observant. If that wasn’t bad enough, there is a legion of criminals that swipe bags from airports, train stations, taxis, hotels, trains, and other tourist hotspots.

The worst-case scenario

A person can be trapped in a strange city with no clothing, no toiletries, and no way to replace them. The only recourse left will be to use credit cards to purchase everything, which can quickly add several hundred dollars to your account. That can turn a short business trip or a vacation into a costly affair that will take months to pay off.

Always take out comprehensive travel insurance

Every traveller should purchase insurance. The few dollars spent on an insurance policy can make the difference between a miserable trip and an enjoyable stay. The coverage will keep you out of debt and reduce the risks associated with long-distance travel.

Finding cheap travel insurance

Cheap travel insurance is now available for people from all walks of life, including students, families on holiday, and business travellers. Spending a few dollars on a policy makes a lot of sense, and it is easy to get very cheap rates. There are many websites that can provide dozens of quotes for low-cost coverage.

This coverage is actually a bargain when you consider the cost of your more expensive possessions. A good suit can cost over $500, and a laptop can cost $2000. A person that lacks coverage will have to incur those costs out of pocket.

Use your credit card

An easy way to ensure your luggage is covered is to purchase your tickets with a credit card. Most credit card providers offer travel insurance as part of their package. It makes the whole process so much simpler.

A quick word on health insurance

Contrary to popular belief, most travellers are not covered by national health insurance schemes in other countries. There are also some large countries, including the United States, China, and India, that don’t even have a national health insurance scheme. Medicare will not cover an Australian travelling outside the country. If your medicine is lost with your luggage, you will have to pay the full cost to replace it.

Travelling without travel insurance is a very risky affair. If your luggage is lost or left in a transit city, you will be in a very tricky situation. So play it safe and take out comprehensive travel insurance before you head off.
