This Week: The Magnificent Mile
At the end of my walk down the Magnificent Mile was the beautiful neo-Gothic Tribune Tower. Correspondents for the Chicago Tribune brought back rocks and bricks from a variety of historically important sites throughout the world. Many of these have been incorporated into the lowest levels of the building and are labeled with their location of origin. Stones included in the wall are from sites like the Taj Mahal, the Parthenon, Palace of Westminster, the Great Pyramid, Notre-Dame, the Great Wall of China, the Berlin Wall among others. Here was a little piece of Texas home in the Alamo. In all, there are 136 fragments in the building.
I link to this Flickr set every year on the anniversary of September 11th. It is a powerful journal of the day from one photographer's view point and I highly recommend going through the whole set and looking at each photo and reading each description. We will never forget.
