The cake topper is special because it is from their original wedding cake. The last picture I call "Legacy" in my head. My aunt and uncle, three sons, three daughters-in-law and four grandchildren. Not bad work for the first 50 years.
001-106579.jpg 001-106575.jpg 001-106578.jpg 001-106577.jpg 001-106576.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/anywhere-but-here Anywhere But Here http://www.photine.net/entry/anywhere-but-here Wed, 14 Jul 2010 06:05:23 -0800 Museums & Art 2:12 art graffiti houston street_art texas
Anywhere But Here by 2:12

I admit it. I am square. I am a nerd. I'm a rule follower. It's so bad that I rarely even jaywalk even if I am in a deserted downtown Houston with no traffic or people around. The rules are the rules. Almost every personality test that I have taken has highlighted this part of my personality sometimes as a good thing, sometimes not. I know it is who I am and I've come to accept it.

So the fact that I am head over heels over some street art, something that is essentially an illegal activity, that is breaking the rules is a surprise to me. When I was in Galveston in May I bumped into some fellow photographers who directed me to a piece of art that was on an abandoned building. It was love at first sight and I came home and immediately looked up the artist, 2:12.

Since I now follow him on Twitter and since I now live in town I was able to go and view his latest piece almost as soon as it was put up. It has such a wonderful feeling of whimsy and I know that it must have taken a long time to create. You can see how long it takes to work on one piece in this video from his website. I am certainly not condoning graffiti especially if it happens on an active building or business or as I have to deal with in my day job, a school. And I am not a fan of a lot of the graffiti artwork I see out there, but I am a fan of this artist and eagerly look forward to following his career.

I know. I'm a wild rebel. No telling what I'll do next. I very well may cross an intersection against a light. Look out!
001-106562.jpg 001-106557.jpg 001-106561.jpg 001-106558.jpg 001-106560.jpg 001-106559.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/art-car-parade-2010 Art Car Parade 2010 http://www.photine.net/entry/art-car-parade-2010 Tue, 13 Jul 2010 07:18:56 -0800 Wheels art art_car cars festival parade wheels
The Art Car Parade rolls through downtown Houston in May. It is one big celebration all weekend long culminating in this display of rolling art. The second reason that I moved to themes was that I loved photoblogs that have multiple photos in one post that told a story. When you see four, five, six photos together with one theme or from one event or with one storyline it is so much more powerful to me than one photo a day. That is probably a personal thing for me, but while I loved it I could not do it with my old setup so I compromised and did one photo a day with the theme spread over the week.

As soon as I moved to Pixyblog I was able to put multiple photos in a post, but I was quite happy with my theme a week life and had no reason to change. But all good things grow, evolve and change and so it will be with my photoblog posting. I once again have a huge backlog, this time of themes. I could post a different theme every week from now until the end of September and not have to take another new photo in that time period. That knowledge has put a dent in my photo taking and my photo sharing. I hesitate to take photos because I already have so many to share. I need to clear the backlog out and I finally have the capabilities to present the photos in a multiple photo format.

Thus I've decided that I will now post multiple images in one post. A theme that used to take a week can now be done in one day. This will mean that I will not be posting every day. Actually I could post a new theme every day for two weeks and have plenty, but I'm not doing that. I don't want to set up a definite posting schedule, but for the foreseeable future it will be two to three times a week. The photos I feel tell the best story together will be on the photoblog and the rest will go on Flickr. I think this change will enable me to share my adventures in a much more timely manner (I still have photos from March I haven't posted). There may be some bumps along the road as I figure out the system, but I am looking forward to a new way of seeing and a new way of sharing. I hope you will come along for the ride.
001-106250.jpg I am not adjusting well to my new apartment. I know I said this already, but I am amazed by how much a creature of comfort and habit I am. If I ever get into a permanent situation like a house it will probably take dynamite to make me move. Moving is not my thing. Apparently change is not my thing either.

I always have problems adjusting to summer vacation. Again, suddenly having two months (well actually one month because of the move) of unstructured free time does not do well with my likes routines nature. I certainly like my days off, but not so much of it at once. I think the ideal schedule would be to consistently have three day weekends with some weeks off thrown in here and there. I wonder what job has that schedule?

And finally my photography groove has been out of sorts really all year. I still have three rolls of film to scan and I am so behind on posting. I need to rethink some things.

Hope I find one or more grooves soon.

001-106214.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/wisteria-too Wisteria Too After traveling in Europe where she collected miniature furniture and accessories, Mrs. Thorne commissioned over two dozen miniature rooms created by cabinetmakers from her own drawings. The scale is: one inch to one foot. The rooms were exhibited in the 1933-1934 Chicago's Century of Progress Exposition, the 1939 San Francisco's Golden Gate International Exposition, and in the 1940 New York World's Fair.

Later, Mrs. Thorne had 29 more rooms created, copying Europe's castles, museums and historic homes. She commissioned architects to create historically accurate settings and had the textiles and carpets made by the Needlework Guild of Chicago. The rooms showing the French and English architectural and decorating styles from the 1500's to the 1920's, were exhibited in 1937 at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1942 Mrs. Thorne gave 37 more Miniature Rooms to the Art Institute of Chicago. Those rooms offered views of American history between 1875 and 1940. The Art Institute of Chicago's Thorne Miniature Rooms exhibit of 68 individual rooms is said to be the world’s largest miniature room collection.

The website has postcards of many of the rooms from. Keep in mind that each room you look at is a miniature. The detail is incredible.

Photoblog Pick: Salt Pond Beach, Kauai by Heather Powazek Champ

001-102080.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/entry-way Entry Way http://www.photine.net/entry/entry-way Mon, 22 Mar 2010 03:00:05 -0800 Museums & Art chicago miniatures museum
This Week: Thorne Miniature Rooms

Lovely house isn't it? It IS lovely and it is tiny. It is a miniature room at the Art Institute of Chicago. This week photos from the Thorne Miniature Rooms. More about how these rooms came to be later in the week, but first a personal note. When I was growing up I had a dollhouse. My dollhouse was made of wood, on wheels and had two stories with three rooms on each level. Each room had miniature furniture in it. Sofas, tables, beds, chairs. I loved that dollhouse and all the miniatures in it. I loved rearranging the furniture and looking at the lovely detail on the tiny pieces. And that house was even more special because it used to be my mother's dollhouse when she was little. And my grandmother is the one who made a lot of the pieces, furniture, curtains, etc. I had very limited time in Chicago and I knew it was most important to see things like American Gothic and the Impressionist wing, but a part of me really longed to see the miniatures room. And I did! Although I really could have spent two to three times as long as I did. Next visit!

001-102010.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/city-by-the-sea City by the Sea http://www.photine.net/entry/city-by-the-sea Fri, 19 Mar 2010 06:12:03 -0800 International ocean panama skyline
This Week: In the City II

Ahhhh. Look how beautiful. Visitors know how much I love the water and I would love to live in a city by the sea. Voila! As soon as that much anticipated lottery ticket comes through (oh yeah... I keep forgetting to buy one) I can buy a condo from the myriad that are springing up all over Panama City. All of the newest ones looking out over the Pacific Ocean. But a Houston home should probably come first and that will be a few years away. It's nice to dream however. I added a bunch of new photos that go along with this theme to the Panama Flickr set.

Today is the last weekday of my Spring Break. Except for a bad blip last night where I went all the way inside the Rodeo and found I didn't have my memory card (I'm still upset because I may not be able to go back before it closes) it has been a very nice and active Spring Break. Once I am back at work it is head down and plow ahead until summer vacation.
001-101969.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/jordache Jordache http://www.photine.net/entry/jordache Thu, 18 Mar 2010 06:23:11 -0800 International advertising billboard jordache panama
This Week: In the City II

It took a few trips going by this billboard before it clicked. Jordache? Haven't heard that name since the '80s. In fact many things about Panama are in the 1980s. Everyone asked if it was expensive. Not really. Enough for you to think, huh, that wasn't too bad, but not crazy cheap. Basically 1980s prices. There are also products that we don't have anymore. I walked past a display of Tang not something I can easily find in the U.S. Or Clorets. Remember Clorets? The products that you walk by and then think "hey we used to have that!" Where did it go?!

In honor of St. Patrick's Day NASA released this amazing photo of Ireland. Check it out.

Flickr Favorite: Ireland by NASA Goddard Photo and Video
001-101956.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/canal-architecture Canal Architecture http://www.photine.net/entry/canal-architecture Wed, 17 Mar 2010 07:09:25 -0800 Architecture architecture canal panama
This Week: In the City II

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I went to Ireland when I was in college and absolutely loved it. I hope to go back again one day. Now on to today's photo. This is part of the city that was the American base when the U.S. owned the Canal. In Panama City there is the American side and the Panamanian side and even though it is all owned by the Panamanians my tour guides still referred to it that way. You can see the very military like architecture to these buildings which now house government offices.
001-101940.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/street-markets Street Markets http://www.photine.net/entry/street-markets Tue, 16 Mar 2010 04:00:05 -0800 International
This Week: In the City II

Street markets and vendors that have set up in one part of the town. I'm pretty sure my family would not have let me go to this area, much less alone, but I really didn't get a scary vibe from it. As in all big cities you have to be smart. I think markets like this are so fascinating.

Photoblog Pick: Evening hues on road by Traces
001-101906.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/hotel-el-panama Hotel El Panama http://www.photine.net/entry/hotel-el-panama Mon, 15 Mar 2010 04:00:05 -0800 International hotel panama
This Week: In the City II

Part II of my series of photos taken in Panama while I was being driven around the city. The first part of this theme starts here.
001-101889.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/welcome-spring Welcome Spring http://www.photine.net/entry/welcome-spring Fri, 12 Mar 2010 05:00:05 -0800 iPhone flowers hipstamatic iphone
This Week: Varoius and Sundry Works

Welcome spring and especially welcome spring break which starts today for me at 3:30! To say I am happy is an understatement. I had one of the worst spring breaks ever last year and I'm determined to enjoy this spring break to its fullest.

This photo was taken at park in the area of Houston I hope to move to this summer. It has a community garden where people can rent little plots and have gardens or flower beds. It is a wonderful little space. The photo was taken with the Hipstamatic iPhone app which has made the iPhone almost like one of my toy film cameras. It is so much fun and creates wonderful images. You can see some more in this Flickr set.

Spring Break! Woo hoo!
001-101821.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/columbia-memorial Columbia Memorial http://www.photine.net/entry/columbia-memorial Thu, 11 Mar 2010 05:01:05 -0800 Houston houston jsc memorial nasa
This Week: Various and Sundry Works

Before I had a digital camera, I had a point and shoot film camera like everyone else. Mine was a Canon Advantix and I used it for various things and invariably never developed the film. I finally just threw a lot of stuff away because I knew there was nothing very memorable on it anyway, but I kept one roll of film. I moved it when I changed apartments. I was always very careful with it and always knew where it was. It was the roll of film that had four shots from the Space Shuttle Columbia Memorial.

I'm a huge fan of NASA and manned space flight. It makes my heart soar to think of people exploring space. I was heartbroken when Columbia fell. I was at a solo competition when I heard about the shuttle destruction. I found out in the morning and had to wait all day for the contest to be over before I could get home and watch the news. The summer before the accident I got to see the commander, Rick Husband, at a concert I was attending in San Antonio. His daughter was in the honor choir and they announced that one of the songs from the concert would be used as a wake up call on his next mission. This mission. It was such a happy moment. My worlds collided in the best way. All day at the solo contest I kept trying to remember if this was the mission he was on. This was before I had my always in my pocket iPhone. As soon as I got in the car I flipped on the news and within minutes they were reading the names and there it was.

This was also a difficult time because I was living in Houston. The home of the astronauts. The home of Johnson Space Center. The news was constant and it was sad. A few days after the accident the President came to Houston for a memorial service. That was the first evening I had time to get away and go down to JSC. I grabbed my camera, bought some flowers and headed out there. After I parked and was walking toward the memorial I looked at my camera. Four shots. Four! I took my four shots, paid my respects, shed some tears and was glad I had the chance to have this moment. I came home and took the film out of the camera and put it in a drawer. And it stayed in a drawer for six years. I finally got it developed late last year. Of the four shots only two came out since it was dusk when I was there. Here is one of them. This photo is special to me for so many reasons and brings back so many memories.

Flickr Favorite: Space Shuttle Endeavour by gsusmaniac
001-101775.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/hotel-views Hotel Views http://www.photine.net/entry/hotel-views Wed, 10 Mar 2010 05:00:05 -0800 USA chicago skyline
This Week: Various and Sundry Works

The view from my hotel room when I was in Chicago. The desk clerk asked me if I wanted a room with one or two beds. I told him I wanted the one with the best view and I have to say I was pretty happy with the selection. Navy Pier is in the distance as is Lake Michigan. I have to say just about everything was nearly perfect for this trip. No trips this year because I am going to work on paying off my credit card. Once that is done I will have a lot more financial freedom to take a lot more trips.
001-101756.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/the-gulf-building The Gulf Building http://www.photine.net/entry/the-gulf-building Tue, 9 Mar 2010 05:00:05 -0800
This Week: Various and Sundry Works

One of the things I got to do on the High in Houston tour was go to the top of the Esperson Building. The Esperson Buiding is one of my two favorite buildings in Houston. I never thought in a million years I would be able to go to the top, but the organizers of this tour completely delivered on the "High in Houston" concept. From this building I had a perfect view of my other favorite building in town, the Gulf Building which you see here. The best part of this story is that earlier I was able to go to the top of the Gulf Building and I had a great view of the Esperson building. The circle is complete.

Photoblog Pick: Bird Watching by Your Waitress
001-101740.jpg http://www.photine.net/entry/boudoir Boudoir http://www.photine.net/entry/boudoir Mon, 8 Mar 2010 05:00:05 -0800 Miscellaneous bedroom hotel
This Week: Various and Sundry Works

I did lots of cleaning out of folders, websites and mobile phones this weekend so this week is going to clean out my miscellaneous folder. First up is the bedroom that goes along with the bathroom in Saturday's mirror project. Luxurious!
001-101713.jpg
